WIND, TIDE & OAR (PG)

  • Gloucester Guildhall 23 Eastgate Street Gloucester United Kingdom (map)

Dir: Huw Wahl | UK, Netherlands, France | 2024 | 84 mins

Documentary

Shot on analogue film over three years, Huw Wahl’s absorbing, evocative documentary explores the world of engineless sailing, inviting deep reflections on our relationship with nature, our understanding of and commitment to sustainability, and our care for the world around us.

Following an array of traditional boats as they journey through rivers, coastlines and on the open seas and spanning the UK, the Netherlands, and France, Wind, Tide & Oar creates a contemplative space, addressing themes of ecology, heritage, traditional skills, and maritime history. Using a 1960s hand-wound camera, director Huw Wahl offers a poetic, intimate and eerily timeless perspective on a millennia-old craft that was upended by the invention of mechanised power. Here, sailing becomes a means to explore our interaction with and responsibility to the environment.
