Cine Club: West End Musicals Moulin Rouge - 25th Anniversary (15)

Nicole Kidman was nominated for an Oscar for her dazzling turn alongside Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting) in Baz Luhrmann’s celebrated 2001 jukebox musical, the third act in his “Red Curtain” trilogy after Strictly Ballroom and Romeo + Juliet, now back in cinemas for its 25th anniversary. 

An aspiring poet, Christian (McGregor) moves to the Montmartre quarter in Paris to join the Bohemian revolution. There, he falls in with a troupe of performers planning a spectacular show that they hope to sell to the Moulin Rouge nightclub. As Christian enters the club's nocturnal world of vice and passion, he falls passionately in love with Satine (Nicole Kidman): the Moulin Rouge’s notorious, glamorous star courtesan.

Also nominated for Best Picture, Moulin Rouge! was the justifiable winner of Oscars for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. Bringing a lavishly romantic fantasy Paris to life, it’s a giddy musical masterpiece, a whirlwind of cinematic delights.
