About King Creole (PG)
One of the great musicals of the 1950s, Oscar-winning director Michael Curtiz’s (Casablanca) King Creole was considered by Elvis Presley to be his own best work on film.
Based on the Harold Robbins novel and featuring a fantastic Dixieland-infused Leiber and Stoller soundtrack, it stars Elvis as troubled 19-year-old Danny Fisher, who drops out of school to support his family. After his singing talent is discovered, he’s hired by New Orleans nightclub ‘King Creole’ – but quickly becomes caught between the club owner (Paul Stewart) and a dangerous mobster, Maxie Field (Walter Matthau), who wants to exploit him.
