About Birds of War (TBC)

A London-based Lebanese journalist and a Syrian activist and cameraman retrace their love story over 13 years of war, revolution and exile. Drawing on intimate personal archive material, Birds of War asks what it means to build a life together in a world shaped by conflict.

Janay Boulos, a young Lebanese journalist for the BBC, first contacts Syrian cameraman Abd Alkader Habak during the final months of one of the bloodiest and most decisive turning points in Syria’s brutal civil war. Through texts, video and voice messages, their bond deepens as Janay learns more about the extraordinary young man documenting violence for her reports. When Habak is forced to flee Syria, they meet in-person for the first time. Distance, war, cultural differences and familial judgements temporarily fade – but they are never far from the question that will soon come to haunt them: how can two people from such disparate worlds be together?
