Dir: Filip Hammar, Fredrik Wikingsson | Sweden | 2024 | 95 mins | Subtitled

Documentary

Joyous, life-affirming and emphatically moving, Sweden’s Oscar entry for Best International Feature is the most popular documentary in the country’s history.

The Last Journey follows Swedish TV hosts Filip Hammar and Fredrik Wikingsson as they take Hammar’s father Lars on a road trip to France. Recently retired after 40 years as a French teacher, Lars has painfully retreated into himself with age. So, Filip and Fredrik bundle him off to retrace the same road trip through the south of France that the family used to go on when Filip was a child, back in the same small orange car. Restaging some of the most evocative moments from their shared history amid beautiful scenery, they try their best to rekindle Lars’ spark.
