This August, one of our newest members of staff is taking on a challenge to help raise money for PRIDE in Gloucestershire this September. We asked Matt a few questions about his role and how we can all help support this exciting fundraiser!
What is the steps challenge?
I’ve challenged myself to do 500,000 steps throughout August to try and raise much needed funds for PRIDE in Gloucestershire 2018. I was inspired by our Chair, who is walking the Gloucester way at the end of the month over 3-days non-stop, where he is going to be visiting every town in Gloucestershire along his way. My 500,000 steps through-out August is a big challenge for me as it means daily steps of just over 16,000 and normally I do about 10,000 on any given day.
Why are you completing the steps challenge?
I am completing the challenge to try and raise much needed funds for this year’s PRIDE in Gloucestershire. It is the 13th year that we have had an annual PRIDE event in our county but we are a brand new committee starting from scratch and £0 in the bank. It has been 7 months so far of hard work to raise money and vital funding, so this challenge is my little bit extra to get some more money into making this year’s event the best it can be for our county.
How can people help?
People can help by sponsoring me to do my challenge – I have a JustGiving page and every donation gives me a bigger push to complete the challenge. So far, I am currently ahead of where I should be at this stage.
They can also help by attending our fundraisers and donating on the day. We currently have a couple left before the big day on Saturday 8th September. We are bag packing at Sainsburys Gloucester Quays on Saturday 18th August, then we are flying over to Cinderford for the first EVER pride fundraiser in the forest, where we have a 90’s cheese night at The Lion. We are also launching PRIDE on Friday 31st August at the Shush Bar in Cheltenham.
We are also looking for volunteers on the day. If people are interested in volunteering or knowing more about PRIDE in Gloucestershire 2018 they can email email@example.com
What is your role within Pride in Gloucestershire and what does it entail?
I am very excited to be the Production Manager for PRIDE in Gloucestershire 2018. Having been a volunteer for the past 6 years, it means the world to me to be a part of the organising for this day and working hard to bring a day and night full of entertainment to the LGBTQ+ community of Gloucestershire to bring everyone together as a community again. I’m also very excited because it is the most locally-based act list we have had for a few years with 73% of the acts across both stages being from the county.
What can we expect from this year’s Pride?
This year’s Pride is set to be an amazing day. In the park, we have two music stages showcasing talent from the county and beyond – Our headline acts are an up & coming artist from Cheltenham, Lucy Whittaker & Eurovision sweet-heart Nicki French. We have an art exhibition sponsored by Gloucester City Homes to showcase even more local talent; a political speaker’s corner to help bring the politics back into Pride, Danters Fun Fair will be there, some great food stalls including a Vegan food stall. We will also be having stalls with local crafts and organisations. It is set to be a jam-packed day and all free entry.
We also have an AfterParty at Liquor & Chow, Westgate Street – where we have BGT’s Danny Beard and House Diva Amrick Channa gracing the stage to entertain everyone. Tickets are £5, currently we still have some early-bird £4 tickets still available and every single penny goes back into PRIDE and securing the event for next year.
If all of that wasn’t enough, from Friday 7th September you can head to The Guildhall for PRIDE week where you can watch 3 amazing LGBTQ+ films; ‘Pride’, ‘The Miseducation of Cameron Post’ & ‘A Fantastic Woman’.
This year’s theme for the day is #FlyingYourFlag and the evening is #TrueColours.
