Right at the heart of the venue, we have our Bar & Kitchen, which offers delicious, fresh, homemade food which caters to all. From toasties and sandwiches to jacket potatoes and falafel, there’s something for everyone, making it a great place to come and enjoy with family and friends. Plus, SoGlos placed it in their ‘18 of the best vegan menus in Gloucestershire’!
We had a chat with Catering Manager, Jason Paul, to give you more of an insight as to what makes Guildhall Bar & Kitchen extra special.
What makes Guildhall Bar & Kitchen different to others in Gloucester?
The Guildhall Bar & Kitchen is different to other venues in the city because it caters for such a wide variety of diets and preferences. During the day, a full café menu is on offer, including meat, veggie and vegan dishes. The menu is almost fully customisable, so if you saw an item on the menu that you couldn’t eat because you were vegan, the staff would be happy to substitute the non-vegan items with vegan friendly items. The Guildhall Bar and Kitchen buys almost all of its fruit, veg and meat from independent businesses based right in the city centre, and what’s better is that all of it is organic and fresh. The Kitchen also provides buffets and bespoke menus for meetings and conferences.
During the evening the café turns into a vibrant event bar selling a variety of local and recognised brand beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks. What makes us different? Where else in the city can you go and watch a film with a pint or a bottle of wine (that you didn’t sneak in!) with real glassware, or ethically sourced coffee from a proper espresso machine? The answer is nowhere else.
What experience are you hoping customers to have during their time there?
To enjoy a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with exceptional food and drink in a safe environment where you can either just enjoy the company of your friends and family, or the music/cinema/comedy/theatre/conference event that you are attending.
What’s your favourite dish on the menu and why?
The Homemade Falafel! A lot of work has gone into making our falafel recipe crunchy on the outside whilst staying moist and delicious on the inside. The red pepper dip is the perfect accompaniment to the falafel, fresh pitta and onion rings.
Why did you decide to include vegan, vegetarian and gluten free dishes on top of an ordinary menu and kids menu?
We wanted to make sure that we can cater for everybody. There’s nothing worse than going to a restaurant or café and not being able to find anything on the menu that you like, or if the menu doesn’t cater for your food preferences/tolerances. With the vegan movement surging as much as it is, we wanted to make sure that we are on the forefront of the city providing options for what is likely to be a huge share of the food market one day. As for the kids menu, a number of our staff are parents and we agreed that providing a relaxed environment where mums and dads can bring their kids to is a good thing, and to be able to offer cheaper kids options makes it more affordable for families to spend quality time bonding together as a unit.
What coffee do you source and what makes it unique?
We stock Ethical Addictions coffee, which are based less than half a mile away from us. Their coffee is ‘farm direct’, which means it cuts out buyers, exporters, traders, shippers and wholesalers. Instead the coffee comes straight from the farms to Ethical Addictions here in Gloucester, meaning that the farms get paid a good price for the coffee, and as customers we are getting a fair price too. All of the coffee is ethically sourced which means the workers are given fair wages as well as charity work that Ethical Addictions take part in, one such venture which includes providing children education in farming and life skills, which means that one day those children can invest back into their community. Also the coffee tastes great.
